Birds of Wildcliff Nature Reserve

Dedicated to plant and wildlife conservation in South Africa's Cape Floral Kingdom

A substantial variety of birds has been seen at Wildcliff. We have built a pond with an island for the wildlife, and already it has attracted a pair of Blue Cranes, South Africa's endangered national bird. Perched on the "W" above is a Cape Sugarbird, lover of proteas. Others include:
  • Raptors: eagles, buzzards and owls
  • Sunbirds: several varieties
  • Kingfishers and flycatchers
  • Herons, storks, cranes and geese
  • Migrants, such as the "Piet-my-vrou"
  • and of course the ubiquitous hadedas.
A list of bird sightings with common names & scientific names is shown below. An updated list (Feb 2010) is attached here, with just common names. If you are interested in conducting an ornithological survey or study at Wildcliff, please complete the Application Form on the research page. See also our Birding Resources Page, and some photos.
