Wildcliff Nature Reserve

Dedicated to plant and wildlife conservation in South Africa's Cape Floral Kingdom

Fish of the Wildcliff Nature Reserve

Wildcliff is a nature reserve in the Langeberg mountain range of South Africa’s Western Cape. Three local freshwater species are found in rivers such as those running through Wildcliff. These are the Cape Kurper, the Smallscale Redfin minnow, and the Cape Galaxias.

One, the Cape Kurper, has been found in the Wildekrantz river, and Cape Galaxias have been netted in the Peterkloof stream as well as in Wildekrantz. We would like to know more about these fish and their habitats, and try to ensure their conservation. We seek volunteer researchers willing to conduct a study of these fish – their presence and conservation priorities. A preliminary survey with suggestions for further research may be found here.

Recommended fish capture method: Place a large butterfly net at the bottom of a pool in a river. Sprinkle bread crumbs on the surface of the water, and when fish come to eat, scoop them up into the net.
