Wildcliff Nature Reserve

Dedicated to plant and wildlife conservation in South Africa's Cape Floral Kingdom

Forest Flora of Wildcliff

Although the dominant vegetation biome of the Wildcliff Reserve is mountain fynbos, a significant proportion is chratacterised by afromontane forest -- the ancient forest of endemic trees that has largely been lost to centuries of felling.

This forest, more specifically known as Knysna-Amatole montane forest, resides chiefly in the valleys, where fires seldom penetrate. We have clambered through these kloofs, entranced by the variety of succulents, ferns, and legendary trees such as yellowwood and stinkwood. Click on the picture at right to take a virtual hike through the gorge known as Wildekrantz.
