A
Study of Gastrointestinal Parasites in Free
Ranging Baboons at Wildcliff
Nature Reserve, South Africa
Kelly Sloan, a
research volunteer at Wildcliff, has proposed undertaking a study on
infectious parasites in the local baboon troop. She has experience
identifying intestinal
parasites from working as a veterinary technician.
Gastrointestinal parasite infections are widespread and are an
increasing threat to natural populations. Parasites play a
central role in ecosystems and at low levels they are a normal
component of a functioning ecosystem. At higher levels, however,
parasites have the potential to impact host health and survival.
Kelly is planning her
parasitology study in conjunction with a graduate student in the Baboon
Study Unit at the University of Cape Town, as well as with Professor
Sonja Mathee of Stellenbosch University.
The full proposal may be found here.
